Who was Dick Fosbury?

A great high jumper and the inventor of the "Fosbury Flop" is the short answer. For more about this innovator in athletics, go HERE to learn more about Richard Douglas "Dick" Fosbury and HERE to learn more about the flop itself.

Here is a picture of the technique, but that's not Mr. Fosbury.

He won the Olympic Gold medal in 1968 using this technique. This is him (recently):

Statistical "Outliers"

Here is the article we were talking about in math class today about Jeff Carter (now with LA) leading the league in scoring and how players who were born earlier in the year than others achieve an advantage when coming up through Canadian junior hockey. Jeff Carter's birthday is, coincidentally, January 1st...

Click HERE to read about Outliers like Jeff Carter

The book "Outliers" is not totally about math and is a fun read. Maybe your parents have a copy you could borrow.

How Deep is the OCEAN?

This comes from one of my favourite tv personalities, Mr. George Strombolopolous

"Human beings know surprisingly little about the deepest parts of the world's seas and oceans. The major reason for that lack of knowledge is the incredible depth of some of those bodies of water, and the intense pressure exerted on anyone or anything that travels down that deep."

May the 4th (FOURTH) Be With You?

Rumours are swirling around Thompson Elementary right now that next Friday is going to be "Star Wars Day" in honour of the May 4th "unofficial" day. Wouldn't that be cool? Great idea by the student council. Mr. Out and myself are totally stoked.

In honour of that, here is the (lip-synched) tribute we watched. The original is done by a Canadian acapella singing group called Moosebutter.

Here's a funny version (check out princess Leia's "hair bagels")

and the original: MOOSEBUTTER!

The ElectroCity Game (+ contest)

A GREAT game to play.
We are going to have a contest in Thursday's class. So, you can practice it tonight

The idea is to take a (New Zealand) town and make it in the way you want. It's all about balance and planning. You need to balance your city's growth with it's Environmental impact.

You will get a score at the end that rates you in 4 categories. You might get a good score in 1 category, but bad ones in others and that will hurt your score overall.

There is no right or wrong way to play, so have fun, try it different ways and see if you can build a "great town"

PS. That is not my score, it is a sample from the instructions.

My Bold Stanley Cup Prediction

While both down 3 games to 1 in their first round series, I think that the Stanley Cup Finals will be between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Vancouver Canucks. *

Only 3 teams have ever come back to win the series when trailing 3 to 0. Philadelphia in 2010, the NY Islanders in the 70s and the Maple Leafs in the 40s...

*Please note that I was making this prediction earlier this week (before Pittsburgh defeated Philadelphia 3-2 in game 5).

OOPS. I guess that went badly...
