it's about farming (factory-farming) in the USA, but is rather eye-opening.

What We Can Learn from Mason Raymond Overcoming his Injury
#21
-- Lying in a Boston hospital with a broken back and uncertain future last June, Vancouver Canucks forward Mason Raymond could only think of one thing: the Stanley Cup.
Knowing his team still had a chance to win it helped lift Raymond out of that hospital bed and onto a plane and back to Vancouver, where he stood rinkside in a body brace to salute the home crowd on the big screen at Rogers Arena during Game 7.
“Something was terribly, terribly wrong, as much pain as I’ve been in my entire life,” he said of that first night. “I had something that was serious and maybe career long, but at the end of the day we had a chance to win the Cup and that’s all I could think about.”
It wasn’t until a while later, after that opportunity for the franchise’s first championship had passed, that Raymond began to think about other things -- mostly the ones that he could no longer do.
Like get out of bed. Or get dressed.
So when Raymond skates in front of that Vancouver crowd again for the first time against Nashville Predators on Thursday night, it will be with a new perspective on life. His first game since that awkward hit by Bruins’ defenseman Johnny Boychuk left him with fractured vertebrae will include a renewed appreciation for the fact he spends his life playing hockey.
"We’re so lucky to play this game for a living," Raymond said Wednesday. "Why it takes an injury to make you realize it, I don't know. But I couldn't walk. You can't walk, you got a whole different outlook on life. Again, putting your clothes on, I couldn't do it. Those are things you take from granted when you wake up every morning."
Raymond said there wasn’t one day during his 5 1/2 months between games when he woke up doubting that he'd get back on the ice.
"I always believed I was going to play again. I never tried to rule that out," he said. "But your life changes. The things you are used to doing, you can’t do. You need help getting in and out of bed for weeks on end, you need help putting your clothes on, and you appreciate the use of your body, especially playing at a high level of hockey."
His body has healed enough for Raymond to play at that level again. But that doesn’t mean it has completely healed, he cautioned. It may never be back to 100 percent.
"Things have changed back there, never will be the same, so I want to make sure I'm at a real comfortable spot before I come back," Raymond said, adding he didn’t want to get into too many specifics about the injury. "I had some serious damage back there."
Raymond paused at this point, taking a moment to collect his thoughts.
"I got issues back there I got to deal with all the time," he continued. "That's part of life. Is it going to be perfect? Probably not, but I'm at a state where it's very good and I continue to work hard and do things that are going to put me in a good spot."
It will not, however, be the same spot that Raymond vacated in the playoffs. The second-line left wing position from which the speedster scored 40 goals during the last two seasons has been claimed by trade addition David Booth during his absence. Judging by practice Raymond will return on a third line withCody Hodgson and Jannik Hansen. Out since June 13, he is just happy to be back at all, even if he's trying to temper expectations.
"It's a little like starting from scratch," Raymond said. "I just went from Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to Game 25 of the regular season. It's going to be different. Once I get into the game I will feel more comfortable. But is that going to take some time to get back to game shape and game mode? Yeah, but I'm very pleased with the process."
The perspective that has come with it helps.

Mr. Young's Reply
Here is what I received from Mr. Young (via email) after he got your letters:
This afternoon around
10 minutes to four I received a call from the
reception to tell me
there was an envelope for me and she was closing the
office at 4. If I
wanted it tonight could I pick it up before 4. I did so.
What a heartwarming
surprise I received when I opened the envelope. I had received some letters
from the school where my daughter-in-law works last year. Getting these letters
is without a doubt one of the most emotional happenings I have experienced
since serving in the
army. It is hard for me to accept all the accolades
poured forth from
these students. Such a large body of volunteers are no
longer able to read
the comments as they have paid the supreme sacrifice and
I feel guilty
receiving them because I was lucky enough to survive. I can
only express my
thanks for the thoughtfulness of your students to express
their feelings, so
well put together in their comments - which
touched me very
deeply. On behalf of all those who had their life snuffed
out fighting for what
they believed in - freedom - please convey my
personal thanks to
the students who prepared these letters which were
delivered to me today.
Their thoughts give me hope that the future is in
good hands, and that
I spent almost five years of my life on a worthwhile
effort to make this
world a better place for generations to come.

200-pound eight-year-old boy taken from U.S. family
CLEVELAND — An 8-year-old elementary school student who weighs more than 200 pounds (90 kilograms) has been taken from his family and placed into foster care after county social workers said his mother wasn't doing enough to control his weight.
The Plain Dealer newspaper reports that the Cleveland 8-year-old is considered severely obese and at risk for such diseases as diabetes and hypertension.
The case is the first state officials can recall of a child being put in foster care strictly for a weight-related issue.
Lawyers for the mother say the county overreached when authorities took the boy last week. They say the medical problems he is at risk for do not yet pose an imminent danger.
A spokeswoman says the county removed the child because caseworkers saw his mother's inability to reduce his weight as medical neglect.

Cats Vs Dogs
Please notice the correct usage (again) of the abbreviation for versus.
I have owned cats and dogs (and love them both). Right now, I have a cat. His name is Zedd. His name came from 2 sources. Firstly, a wizard named Zeddicus Zul Zorander in my favourite novel series (The Sword of Truth) and secondly a Slovakian hockey player named Richard Zednik. My last cat's name also started with the letter "Z". His name was Ziggy (also named after a Slovakian hockey player- Ziggy Palffy). Noticing a theme here?
Here is a recent picture of Zedd (on his bed)

PS. Please note how the "vs" was used in the above title. Versus is not a verb. You can't "verse" anyone. Well, maybe in a game of poetry...

A BIG Thanks
To Ms. Bahd for her insightful and in-depth posts as the Guest Blogger last week.
THREE CHEERS! Now the rest of you have a great example to try and "emulate" (you may have to look that one up and I may have to add that one as a word of the day).
PS. That is not our class lying down to spell out the thank you message- but it could have been!

Liam's Story
TRACY: A STORY
OF LOVE AND HEARTBREAK
I was 12; she was some age under 16. I had never
smoked; she already had twenty times the chance of dying of lung cancer. I had
braces; she had gum disease. Her name was Tracy, and although she was but a
poster on the side of a bookshelf in an elementary school classroom, she was my
first love. Her leathery skin, cataracts, skin damage, throat cancer,
psoriasis, heart disease, and stomach ulcers - who could resist her? She was
addicted to cigarettes, and I to her. I had recently changed schools, and was
still reeling from the shock. When I first entered that unfamiliar classroom, I
was alone, but she saved me, a gleaming star in my stark, cold, and unfeeling
universe. Alas, I could not muster the courage to talk to her. She was the
tobacco industry’s poster child, who was I? I had to face facts. She was, as
they say, “out of my league”. I tried to push her out of my mind, but my
efforts were in vain. My schoolwork suffered, and I became depressed. The
seasons seemed to cry with me. As I sunk further into my depression, the
weather turned from sunny summer to cold winter. My family wondered what had
happened to me, but I couldn’t tell them, they wouldn’t understand.
But, Dear Reader, this is not the end. One cool fall
day, towards the beginning of October, I decided to talk to her for reasons
even I cannot understand. The
day’s studies seemed to speed by. I waited until everyone was gone, and
approached her. She was in her usual position, standing by the bookshelf,
smoking a cigarette. I cleared my throat.
“So, what’s up?” I asked, trying to make
conversation. No response. “Uh,
you should maybe quit smoking. Cancer, and all that.” I immediately realized I
had overstepped my bounds. “But, uh, well, whatever you want is good.” Silence.
I had blown it. “Has anyone ever told you that you look like Marilyn Munroe?”
She looked at me as if examining a specimen under a microscope. I sighed.
“Look, I’m going to level with you. I love you. I have since I first saw you.
Just… please, please take me seriously, because I am.” Now it was her turn to
sigh.
“Look, Liam - that is your name, right? I’m sorry, but I’m just not ready for commitment. “
“But –“ I started.
“No
buts. I think I’ve been nice enough, listening to you, and it’s really time for
you to go.”
My
eyes began to water. “Please-“
“No!”
I
wiped away the tears. “Fine.” I said, and walked away. The last thing I saw as
I left was some kid I vaguely remembered from my class walk up to her and put
his arm around her shoulder. She had lied to me when she said she wasn’t ready
for commitment, but I didn’t care. She was my first love, and she broke my
heart. She was always there, smoking that cigarette in the corner, but I never
looked at her again.

Word Shortcuts Assignment
Follow these instructions (very) carefully
1. Copy the blog entry titled Common Word Shortcuts and then paste it into a Word document on your computer.
2. Make the changes to the file so that it appears as in the sample format shown below.
The Text should all be 12pt in size.
Move the headings (hint! use the shortcuts) until they all match the descriptions.
Use the selection and formatting shortcuts to speed up the process, especially Ctrl+y and drag/drop.
2. Use Save As to put a copy of this file in your Completed Files folder. You can print a copy if you like.
This is what it should look like:
Sample Format:
Sample Format:
Command+Y The Redo command - This command will repeat that last thing you did. You can keep executing this command over and over to redo the same thing over and over. This is especially useful if you are making multiple formatting changes to tab settings or font settings.
Command +D The Font command - This command gives you access to the window of the same name. In this window, you can modify all manner of text appearance including size, spacing, styles, colours, and fonts. While many of these modifications can also be made through toolbar shortcuts, the more rarely used ones such as Small Caps can only be found here.
Common Word Shortcuts
Find which item from list 1 matches which item in list 2 and which item from list 3 they go with.
List 1:
1) Command +A
2) Command +C
3) Command +S
4) Command +V
5) Command +X
6) Command +Y
6) Command +Y
7) Command+Z
8) Command +P
8) Command +P
List 2:
A) The Copy command
B) The Cut command

E) The Print command
F) The Select All command
G) The Undo command
H) The Redo command
List 3:
i) This command updates the file on your storage medium (e.g. hard drive or network drive). Should there be an interruption in your work, you can be sure that everything done up to last time this command was executed will, be safe. When you are working, this command should be executed every few minutes.
ii) This command will reverse that last thing you did. You can keep executing this command over and over to reverse the second-last thing you did, third-last thing you did, etc. You can’t undo past a save.
iii) This command takes you to the Print window, which lets you choose printing options prior to sending the job to a printer.
iv) This command removes the selected text to the “Clipboard” from which it can be pasted to another location or multiple locations. It stays on the clipboard until new text is placed on the clipboard through cutting or copying, even if the file gets closed. This allows you to move text from one file to another easily.
v) This command duplicates the selected text and puts it on the “Clipboard” from which it can be pasted to another location or multiple locations. It stays on the clipboard until new text is placed on the clipboard through cutting or copying, even if the file gets closed. This allows you to copy text from one file to another easily.
vi) This command will repeat that last thing you did. You can keep executing this command over and over to redo the same thing over and over. This is especially useful if you are making multiple formatting changes to tab settings or font settings.
vii) This command puts a copy of the information on the “Clipboard” into your file wherever the cursor is. If you execute this command while text is selected, the text from the clipboard will replace the selected text. Since this command does not remove the data from the clipboard (it only takes a copy), you can keep pasting repeatedly.
viii) This command selects the entire document with the exception of headers, footers, and graphics that are outside the margins. It is useful when making global changes to fonts, spacing, etc.

P.S. VII |
In the friendly letter format, your address, date, the closing, signature, and printed name are all indented to the right half of the page (how far you indent in is up to you as long as the heading and closing is lined up, use your own discretion and make sure it looks presentable). Also the first line of each paragraph is indented.
Your Address I
All that is needed is your street address on the first line and the city, state and zip on the second line. (Not needed if the letter is printed on paper with a letterhead already on it.)
Date II
Put the date on which the letter was written in the format Month Day Year e.g. August 30, 2003. Skip a line between the date and the salutation.
Salutation III
Usually starts out with Dear so and so, or Hi so and so. Note: There is a comma after the end of the salutation (you can use an exclamation point also if there is a need for some emphasis).
Body IV
The body is where you write the content of the letter; the paragraphs should be single spaced with a skipped line between each paragraph. Skip 2 lines between the end of the body and the closing.
Closing V
Let's the reader know that you are finished with your letter; usually ends with Sincerely, Sincerely yours, Thank you, and so on. Note that there is a comma after the end of the closing and only the first word in the closing is capitalized.
Signature VI
Your signature will go in this section, usually signed in black or blue ink with a pen. Skip a line after your signature and the P.S.
P.S. VII
If you want to add anything additional to the letter you write a P.S. (post script) and the message after that. You can also add a P.P.S after that and a P.P.P.S. after that and so on.
